Dear Family and friends,
Where do I begin. Being here has certainly been an adventure.
My kids have told me in the past they think I am crazy and now they have proof.
I just came back from a place where they drop crap on your head deliberately from the sky.
It is a festival in Tlaneeka called "Moose Droppings".
(Actually if the crap hits your spot you win some money).
It was fun, I ate caribou chili there before going to Denali National Park.
On the way to Denali I picked up a female hitchhicker who was backpacking through Canada and Alaska.
She was from France and spoke some English, more than my French but we got along.
She had a backpack that must have weighted a hundred pounds and was a little younger than me.
I found her amazing.
When I got to Denali I took an 8 hour tour bus ride through the park and saw a mother moose with
two little calves. 90% of the baby calves die because the wolves and bears eat them.
These walked right over the road in from of us.
Also saw 2 grizzly bears who had light colored coats.
They do not eat fish because there are none in that river and the vegetarian diet makes
their coats light. Then we saw 4 baby foxes with there mother in a den.
I was glad I had binocculars as most of this was at a distance.
Also saw lots of caribou grazing, sheep and golden eagles who wing spans were about 7 feet.
One eagle was flying around a grizzly bear who we assumed had killed something we could not see.
The first thing I noticed when I saw other parts of Alaska was the color of the people.
Mostly white who spoke English.
In Bethel, the white people are in the minority by far and the natives speak
Upik (not spelled right).
Everybody seems to have all the water they want and flush toilets and electricity.
You don't find this in the villages where I am all the time. Back to my vacation.
I also went to Seward from Anchorage by train, the ride is very beautiful--looks nothing at
all like the tundra around Bethel. It looks like the pictures of Alaska on television or some book.
In Seward I took a boat trip and saw several whales, sea lions, rare birds and glaciers.
Some ice broke off of the glacier in front of us. This is called calving. It was awesome.
So I am looking for my next adventure. Having moose droppings fall from the shy was a first
for me but it was fun.
More later,
